Chapter Ten

An insistent beeping woke Lucas from a dead sleep. He sat bolt upright, reached instinctively to his nightstand and snagged the secure phone from its charger. Disoriented, he couldn’t immediately tell what time it was. He hadn’t slept that hard in…well, ever.

Though it had been nearly a year since the Batphone—as he liked to think of it—had been active, his body responded on autopilot, as it had hundreds of times during his career.

The cell buzzed agitatedly in his fist. Still, he didn’t connect the call immediately. He allowed himself a millisecond to appreciate the fine woman splayed next to him, completely nude, in his bed. She was more beautiful than any of the artwork he’d seen in the great museums around the world, which he’d made a point of visiting when his assignments permitted. Something about paintings drew him. He had no artistic talent himself, but he appreciated the hell out of others’.

Ellie’s blonde hair curled softly around her shoulders as she burrowed into his pillows on her stomach, giving him a fabulous view of her high, tight ass. The only thing better would be if she were awake so that he could stare into the endless blue of her eyes, which reminded him of the Caribbean Sea on a hot summer day.

Lost in his mushy thoughts of her, he jolted when the phone rattled his hand again.

He answered before it woke Ellie, who needed her rest. She’d looked so strung out, even before their impossible hike. There was no way she’d been sleeping lately. He could relate.

“Good morning, sunshine.” Tyler Lambert’s sarcasm greeted him. He was Mason’s partner on the force and in their personal life where they shared a lucky woman—Lacey.

“It was until you interrupted my beauty rest,” Lucas grumbled.

“Hang on, you were actually still sleeping?”

Ty knew how much trouble Lucas had been having lately in that department. Some nights he’d even volunteered to look after Razor and Izzy’s newborn, Ezra. The little guy was getting so big now—heading for a year old—but when he’d been in his up-all-night phase, they’d hung out some. His parents had been grateful for the break. Of course, they’d probably thought Lucas was going home and crashing after they relieved him at the end of his shift, since he had nowhere in particular to be these days.

“It’s after eight. I figured you’d have been up half the night already. When you didn’t answer our texts, we got nervous.”

“Sorry.” He couldn’t believe he hadn’t heard the notifications come through.

“Especially Ryan.” Ty lowered his voice. “Is Ellie in bed with you? Can you put her on for a second? Ryan needs to hear her voice. He’s going kind of nuts since we won’t let him visit in case they’re watching him.”

“Uh…” Would E want her brother to know they were sleeping together?

Damn, it wasn’t like there were many secrets between the close-knit group of friends.

Still, he’d rather it be her choice.

Lucas looked over his shoulder to find her stretching languorously before blinking up at him.
